TRAVELING pro-tips from our last ten (10) destinations
We grow wiser each year that we add new countries to our list of retreat destinations. Here’s a pro-tip from each of the last ten (10) countries we have visited together:
Guatemala: Many villages in Guatemala speak a Mayan dialect first. With Spanish as the second language. Unlike other touristy places in Latin America, English won’t get you very far. Try your best to learn the basics in Spanish before you go.
Indonesia: Did you know Indonesia is made up of 17,000+ islands? Making it one of the largest countries in the world. Each island with their own religious and cultural practices. That means varying dress codes and signs of respect. Pay close attention and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Portugal: “Bread” and a man’s private parts are the same word with different pronunciations. You’ve been warned.
Mexico: Fruits + vegetables are mistakenly blamed for tummy issues south of the border. In reality, it’s food that’s been sitting in the heat (i.e. street meats), dirty ocean water (especially after the rain), and unfiltered drinking water. So enjoy that plate of skinless fresh fruits like mango, papaya, pineapple, and watermelon.
Peru: Meat reigns supreme in South America. And, depending on where you are, veggies are scarce in this arid county. If you’re a vegetarian, like me, quinoa, corn, legumes, and potatoes will be the staples of your diet.
New Zealand: The “wh” is pronounced “f.” It’s a very confusing place to be if you don’t know this LOL.
St. Lucia: Tourism on this little island is very cash-based. And not all ATM’s are compatible with debit cards from the United States. Come prepared with cash for your transportation, excursions, and food.
France: Uber is rare and unreliable. Learn how to use public transportation or consider yourself stranded.
Spain: You can definitely expect stores and restaurants to be closed from 2pm - 6pm. The Spanish eat late and stay up even later. So plan your day accordingly and maybe take a siesta, too.
Costa Rica: Costa Rica is the most biodiverse country on the planet, meaning is has the most diverse wildlife per capita. Stay aware of your surroundings and learn to co-exist with the fauna. When you respect them, they respect you, too.
Hope this helps and hope to see you somewhere new soon :)
Abrazos,
Jax
