WAVES FOR DEVELOPMENT: Not your average after school program
What a difference seven (7) years makes. The first time we visited the small fishing village of Lobitos, WAVES was a small, single-building program.
Today, it's a robust after-school program with eleven staff members, specializing in surf, skate, and Jiu-Jitsu. Each with a holistic approach and a focus on mental health.
WAVES has become a cornerstone of the greater community, fostering a cycle of contribution and connection. As co-director, Henry Espinoza, says, it's our adult responsibility to give back to the people + programs that gave us an opportunity in this lifetime.
Henry is just one of the many Lobitos locals who grew up in the program and now fundraises and works to take this project to the next level.
Seven (7) years ago, our visit was to a dirt lot. This year, we got to tour their library, dojo, fully-stocked surf shop, and even a skate park! Among other collaborations they have scattered throughout the community.
I love to see the quick turnaround of efforts and funds... So it was an easy decision to donate 5% of proceeds from our most recent retreat to WAVES.
Halfway across the world and yet these kiddos hold such a special place in my heart. We will be back soon! More projects... and more skate sessions... to come.
Abrazos,
Jax
